Does anyone know of a group that gets together to talk about issues in contemporary art (preferably in English)?
Maybe I’m not hanging out at the right place or with the right people, but so far I have not
heard much of any interesting discussions.
Of course being illiterate in Chinese doesn’t help either. But are there people talking about the actual work itself
rather than just the names, dates and places of the exhibit?
I’m guessing that most people in Taiwan are not really interested in talking about the work.
They are either afraid to say something - thinking they will look stupid, or they just don’t have an opinion.
I’m asking because I would like to know what others think.
I have always questioned the intention of galleries, especially in recent times.
Most I heard anything about contemporary art was few months ago at “Art Taipei”.
Even then, they were mostly about who is who and not much about the work itself.
It really sucked to hear one of the sales person from a gallery telling a couple (prospective buyer) how nice the piece would look
as they walk into their house and how the abstract piece will look different every time.
It sucked even more to see the couple nodding their heads and imagining.
I still can’t figure out if I’m just bias and so insensitive or if most of the pieces in galleries are pretentious.
I believe there are many artists and intellectuals in Taiwan. Yet, the art scene seems to be divided into two groups.
First group is the ones who are already in the scene and playing the game, or desperately trying to get in the scene.
The other is the by-standers/observers without an opinion to comment.
It sure would be nice to have something in between, where people are having discussions to better understand and inspire each other.
I know there are clubs in Taiwan for just about anything.
The “Million dollar camera club”
The “Honda civic with 18inch wheels club”
The “Girls with foreign boyfriends club”
Etc, etc…
Is there a “contemporary art discussion club”?
I’m not seeking for the “intellectual” discussion, but rather anyone with a passion to
pursue their interest in art related subject.
It sure would be nice to meet a group of passionate people to share and learn something, even if it’s just another point of view.
Please share any resources you may have.
Cheers!
BTW- Did anyone hear about Wim Wenders being in Taipei to work on a project with a Taiwanese film maker? Cool thing…
